From which US ports do cargoes ship to Ukraine?
  • Port of New York and New Jersey — one of the largest on the East Coast. Popular for cargo from the Northeastern part of the USA.
  • Port of Savannah (Georgia) — actively used for shipping goods from the Southeastern part of the USA.
  • Port of Miami (Florida) — convenient for cargo from Latin America and the Southern states.
  • Port of Houston (Texas) — a large logistics hub of the central part of the USA.
  • Port of Los Angeles / Port of Long Beach (California) — the main ports of the West Coast.
How do cargoes get to Ukraine?

First of all, cargoes arrive by sea at major European ports – usually:

  • Port of Hamburg (Germany)
  • Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands)
  • Port of Constanta (Romania)
  • Port of Gdansk and Gdynia (Poland) – are actively used to deliver goods to Ukraine across the Polish-Ukrainian border

Due to the full-scale war in Ukraine, direct sea traffic is limited, so most cargoes arrive at EU ports, after which they are reloaded into containers or trucks and sent to Ukraine by land transport.

Typical route

US Port → Transatlantic Transportation → European Port →

Road transportation / railway → Customs → Ukrainian warehouse.

FCL (Full Container Load) — full container transportation

This is when one shipper fills an entire container (20 or 40 feet). Suitable for large consignments of goods or for goods that require separate storage. Advantages: – Less risk of damage – Faster processing – Easier customs clearance Disadvantages: – Higher costs if the container is not fully loaded

LCL (Less than Container Load) — groupage cargo

This is a delivery when one container is loaded with goods from several senders. Ideal for small consignments. Advantages: – Cost savings – Ability to transport even small goods Disadvantages: – Longer delivery time – Greater risks of delay

DELIVERY TIME

FCL shipping:

US East Coast – 25-35 daysWest Coast – 35-45 days

LCL shipping:

Groupage cargoes are usually delivered in 30-50 days

Airmail:

5–10 days,
but significantly more expensive

Customs clearance

After the cargo arrives at the logistics hub in Europe, the cargo is delivered to Ukraine by road and undergoes customs clearance at one of the Ukrainian customs posts: in Lviv, Kyiv, Odessa or at the border.

It is important to prepare an invoice, packing list, certificates (if necessary), and a contract – this reduces the risk of delay.

Conclusion

Shipping goods from America requires a clear understanding of logistics routes, costs, terms and customs procedures. Groupage cargo is suitable for small consignments, full container loads for large volumes. Proper organization of the process allows you to save money and time.
